Lots of Filipinos are now celebrating the honour that Ms. Pia Wurtzbach has brought to her country – bagging the 2015 Miss Universe title. After 42 years of waiting for the most coveted crown, the Philippines got it.

Armed with not just beauty, but also talent, wisdom and confidence, Ms. Wurztbach reigned supreme in the battle among 80 candidates to get the prestigious Miss Universe crown. She now follows the footsteps of fellow Filipina Miss Universe winners Ms. Gloria Diaz (1969 – Florida, USA) and Ms. Margarita Moran (1973 – Athens, Greece).


However, the recently concluded pageant is now in the spotlight of global issue as the host Steve Harvey made a tremendous mistake of announcing Miss Colombia’s Ariadna Gutierrez as the grand winner. The thought of a back to back win for Colombia was short-lived and gave a lifetime of shame and humiliation to Miss Gutierrez as Harvey made a correction by announcing Miss Philippines as the rightful winner. This brought confusion not only to the audience but to the candidates as well. Harvey apologized to the crowd and to the winners as the copy of the result card was projected on screen.


Miss Gutierrez had to give up the crown and the sash bestowed to her by her fellow Colombian and reigning 2014 Miss Universe title holder Paulina Vega, to Miss Philippines. Although embarrassed and humiliated by the mix up, Miss Colombia still hold her composure and grace and remained as an amazing Miss Universe if only for some minutes.


On the other hand, delayed reaction can be seen on the face of Miss Philippines as the correction was made. As the recent announcement sunk in, Miss Philippines was careful with her reaction and did not immediately walked up to the front of the stage until the organizers asked her to claim her crown. Still, she showed sensitivity and refinement for her colleague and friend from the pageant. She showed her some respect. The traditional winner’s walk was not executed, instead, she approached Miss Colombia.



De-crowning her was a very tough moment for Miss Colombia much as accepting her short-lived happiness.

Deprived of her crowning moment, Miss Philippines remained self-contained knowing that her fellow candidate was experiencing such hard time.

Many hearts hurt for Miss Colombia while many rejoices for Miss Philippines. As we continue to talk about the mix up for the succeeding days, weeks and even years, we should never forget that once upon a time, we had two awesome Miss Universe and that these ladies showed and taught us - vital lessons amidst unfortunate events. That in the middle of the noise, confusion and humiliation, they remained to be the embodiment of true beauty queens.

All women are at risk of ovarian cancer. Generally, this silent killer strikes women ages 40 years old and above and is most common to those who are undergoing menopausal stage. However, recent studies show that there is an increasing trend among younger women developing ovarian cancer.



But what is ovarian cancer? How does it develop? What are its signs and symptoms? How do we prevent it? These are the things that every woman should be aware of.

Ovarian cancer, as defined by Ovarian Cancer National Alliance, is a growth of abnormal malignant cells that begins in the ovaries (women’s reproductive glands that produce ova). The risk of developing such increases as the woman ages. It’s not clear what causes ovarian cancer. However, if a history of cancer runs in your family, the risk of developing ovarian cancer is high. Most women with ovarian cancer report to have the following common signs:

1. Difficulty eating; feeling full quickly when eating
2. Weight loss
3. Discomfort in the pelvis area
4. Increased urination and frequent need to urinate



Experiencing the above mentioned symptoms does not necessarily mean that you already have ovarian cancer. However, if you suffer most of the symptoms identified and if it worries you, see your doctor or gynaecologist to have proper examination. Feel free to tell your gynaecologist if your family has a history of cancer.

In addition to the above, this silent killer symptoms also includes: fatigue, heartburn, constipation, back pain, menstrual irregularities, and painful intercourse.

On-going studies and researches are being conducted by different institutes and organizations to determine ways on how to prevent this silent killer. However, like all other ailments, the risk of developing ovarian cancer may be reduced by living a healthy lifestyle. Likewise, the following may lower a woman’s chance of getting ovarian cancer:

1. Using birth control pills
2. Pregnancy and giving birth
3. Breastfeeding
4. Ligation

1. On your back. Dr. Hooman Melamed, an orthopedic spine surgeon at the DISC Sports & Spine Center in Los Angeles, California, said that sleeping on your back is the best position. Moreover, aaccording to Steven Diamant, a chiropractor in New York City, “sleeping on your back makes it easy for your head, neck, and spine to maintain a neutral position. You're not forcing any extra curves into your back.”  For those whose suffering from acid reflux, laying on your back is the ideal position to fight it since the stomach will be lower than the esophagus and the acid or food can't come back up. For those women who are conscious about their looks and figures, laying on your back also helps prevents wrinkles and reduce breast sagging. However, sleeping on your back may make your snoring even worse and is linked to sleep apnea.
2. On your side. The second best position to sleep is lying on your side, but know which side you are on. Sleeping on your left side may improve digestive problems such as heartburn while lying on your right might possibly worsen it. Sleeping on your left side ease your heart pumping and helps in the effective blood circulation. Lying on your left side can constrict the internal organ such as liver and lungs while right side will allow the spine to ease in its natural curve.
3. On your front. The worst sleeping position is lying on your stomach. Sleeping on your stomach eases snoring. However, it causes strain on your lower back and possible neck pain. Sleeping in this position applies excessive pressure on your nerves, which will cause irritation on nerves and eventually lead to pain, numbness and tingling (the pin and needle-like pains).

Escalator is a moving staircase(but not like those staircases in Harry Potter movies – sigh)that can take people to other floors of the building whether it is up or down. It makes the transportation of passengers between floors easier and faster.


However, most people do not know or often neglect the etiquettes in using these mechanical device which most of the time, causes traffic in the escalators. Although not all countries have issued laws or written instructions on how to regulate the traffic in most escalators, people should be aware of three (3) important reminders as a courtesy to fellow users.

These are the following:

1. Stand on the right.People who are not in a hurry and would like the escalator do its job for them should stand at the right side of the escalator. This is to let other people walk on the left side of the escalator.

2. Leave the left side clear. Tuck your elbows in and don’t go swishing your hands to avoid hitting other people. Move your bags/belongings to the other side. Aside for giving more space to those people walking, this is also for your protection from snatchers.


3. Left side is a walking lane. If you need to dash to the next level, walk on the left. Some people need to rush so that they would not miss their train or be late in their appointment. So whether or not your city has existing rules similar to those mentioned above, it is still best to keep in mind that escalators are for the use of the general public.

Or why do we asked to be thanked for? Basically, we say thank you for the gifts, favors, and assistance we received and we would love to hear people thanking us for the things we do for them. A sincere thank you can lift our mood and see the goodness in other people. It can motivate us to do well and make us feel appreciated and recognized.


Thank all the people who’ve been part of your life. Say thank you to all sorts of people. Show your gratitude from the security guards who greets you every time and make sure that you’re safe while you’re inside their premises, all the janitors/janitress or the utility workers who made sure that you’ll have a clean workplace, the fastfood service crew who welcomes you with a smile, to your officemates and boss who trusted you with workloads.

Saying thank you is truly magical. It shows your gratitude, appreciation and respect. It means you don’t take things, simple as it can be, for granted. After all, saying thank you is free.

SPO2 Mariano Lubo is the first police retiree to donate supplies to his fellow police officers at the Makati Central Police Station.

Posted in the Facebook account of Makati PCR are the photos of the donation ceremony. On his retirement day, instead of waiting for the awards to be bestowed upon the retirees, SPO1 Lubo, donated one laptop unit and 100 police caps to his fellow police personnel. He even arranged some food which he shared with all other police officers at the Makati Central Police Station. Present to receive the donation is the Makati Chief of Police PSSupt. Ernesto T. Barlam.




Now that’s something worth replicating!

Ever imagine charging your mobile phones or laptops without using power cables or lighting up your homes without plugging it into power sockets? How about recharging your car wirelessly? Thinking it’s impossible?


Well, the answer is no. This idea has been thought about 100 years ago by Nikola Tesla – an inventor, engineer, a physicist and major contributor to the development of Alternating-Current electrical system. And now, a team of MIT scientists is now saying that wired power transmission will soon be a thing of the past and that “WiTricity” will be the next big thing.

The idea of “WiTricity” or wireless electricity technology began one night when MIT Professor Marin Soljačić was awoken by a low battery notification from his cellphone. An inkling thought of finding a way to transfer power from the existing wired infrastructure to the phone—without wires came to his mind. Electricity and magnetism is the bases of this new technology and that the “coupled resonators” phenomenon was used to make the wireless power transfer possible.

The experimental design of WiTricity used copper coils with each resonant system and a power AC supply. One of the coil will be connected to the AC power supply which will be the resonant source while the other coil will be the resonant capture device. The resonant capture device is connected to a light bulb.

“The power source and capture device were suspended in mid-air with nylon thread, at distances that ranged from a few centimeters to over 2.5 meters (8.2 ft). Not only was the light bulb illuminated, but the theoretical predictions of high efficiency over distance were proven experimentally. By placing various objects between the source and capture device, the team demonstrated how the magnetic near field can transfer power through certain materials and around metallic obstacles.”

This was the foundation of Prof. Soljačić’s vision, transferring electric energy or power over distance without wires which is being realized through WiTricity Corporation. A corporation which was launched in 2007 for the commercial production of this technology.

In this modern way of life, full of hassles, demands, frustrations and deadlines, many people feel stressed and eventually feel that sudden outburst of feelings. 


As PsychologyToday defines it, stress is simply a reaction to a stimulus that disturbs our physical or mental equilibrium. A little bit of stress, known as “acute stress,” can be exciting—it keeps us active and alert. But long-term, or “chronic stress,” can have detrimental effects on health. You may not be able to control the stressors in your world, but you can alter your reaction to them.


So how can we handle stress and cool off in just a few minutes?  

Here are some few tricks for that:

1) Close your eyes for a few seconds. Tell yourself repeatedly “Take it easy. It’s going to be ok”. 

2) Delay your reaction by doing some inhaling/exhaling exercise or by breathing in/breathe out. This will put some clarity to your mind. You will feel like your system just restarted by doing this for a few seconds.

3) Count. Before saying anything, just count from 1 to 10. This will separate your emotion from your action.

4) Take a leave. Get out of the office, go to the pantry, or just go away. This will help you settle down in just a few minutes. A different environment will eventually change your emotion, your mood. 

5) Splash some water on your face or better, drink some water. This will lower up the tension building in your system.

6) Listen to music. This will divert your attention for a while.

It’s the holiday season once again and Christmas Carols can be heard everywhere. But do you know that one of the most famous Christmas Song has a secret hidden behind its joyful melody and bizarre lyrics? Everyone’s accustomed with the song “Twelve Days of Christmas”. We can all sing its famous lines “On the first day of Christmas, my true love sent to me…”, “and a partridge in a pear tree” in different notes and tunes. But do you really know the real meaning of it?


The “Twelve Days of Christmas” is a song is with hidden references to the basic teachings of Christian faith. It was written in England to help the Catholics practice their faith since it was considered to be a crime in the middle of 1500’s to the 1800’s. Punishment for those who will be caught practicing their faith openly include not only imprisonment, but also death in forms one cannot imagine.

And now, for the song’s real meaning:

On the first day of Christmas my “TRUE LOVE” sent to “ME” a “PARTRIDGE IN A PEAR TREE” – true love means “God” and me is for all those “people who have been christened”, while the partridge in a pear tree mentioned is “Jesus Christ”.
